A Level

A Level tuition costs more than GCSE tuition. Nationally the average one-to-one A Level rate is £41.88 an hour, against £35.86 at GCSE (Tutorful, June 2024). Small group tuition is considerably cheaper, but far fewer centres offer it at A Level at all.
That second point is the one that catches families out. Plenty of places in Birmingham and the Black Country teach GCSE in groups. Once you reach A Level, the list gets short, and the price per hour roughly doubles.
Key Takeaways
One-to-one A Level tuition averages £41.88 an hour in the UK, about 17% more than GCSE.
Group A Level tuition locally tends to run £25 to £35 per student per hour, often for only one hour a week.
A monthly fee tells you nothing until you divide it by the hours you actually get.
Our A Level tuition is £200 a month for three hours a week, which works out at about £15.40 an hour.
29% of secondary pupils in England and Wales have had private tutoring at some point (Sutton Trust, February 2026).
Why does A Level tuition cost more than GCSE?
Because there are fewer people who can teach it. The national average for A Level is £41.88 an hour against £35.86 at GCSE, and the gap widens in the harder subjects: Physics averages £43.04 and Economics £49.95 (Tutorful, June 2024).
A tutor who is comfortable with GCSE Maths is not automatically comfortable with A Level Maths. Further Maths narrows the field again. The same is true across the sciences, where the specification moves a long way beyond what most general tutors teach week to week.
So the premium is not a markup. It is scarcity. Fewer tutors, higher rates, and at A Level a mistake costs more, because there is no safety net underneath a university offer.
What does one-to-one A Level tuition cost?
Expect £35 to £50 an hour across most of the country, with £41.88 as the national A Level average and face-to-face sessions averaging £40.54 against £37.45 online (Tutorful, June 2024). Rates climb sharply in the south: £47 in London and £52 in Oxford, against £24 in Nottingham.
The West Midlands sits in the middle of that spread rather than at the top. That is useful to know if you have been quoted a London rate by a national online agency, which is where most families start looking because it is the only place with prices on the website.
For one hour a week across an academic year, £42 an hour comes to roughly £1,600 for a single subject. Two subjects doubles it.
What does group A Level tuition cost?
Locally, group A Level tuition tends to run £25 to £35 per student per hour in groups of up to four. That is a real saving against one-to-one, but the headline rate hides something: those sessions are very often only one hour a week, per subject.
One hour a week is not much for an A Level. It is enough to go over a topic, and not enough to teach the specification, mark written work and fix the technique that actually moves a grade. Before comparing any two prices, find out how many hours you get.
Group sizes matter too. "Small group" means four students at some centres and eight at others. At eight, in a subject where students arrive with genuinely different gaps, the teaching has to aim at the middle.
How do you compare a monthly fee with an hourly rate?
Divide the monthly fee by the hours you get in a month. Most centres teach about 13 weeks a term, so a month is roughly four sessions. The arithmetic takes seconds and it is the only way to compare two quotes honestly:
£140 a month for 1 hour a week is about £32 an hour
£200 a month for 3 hours a week is about £15.40 an hour
£240 a month for 2 hours a week is about £28 an hour
A £140 monthly fee can look cheaper than a £200 one and cost you twice as much per hour. Do that sum for every centre on your list, including ours.
The same logic applies at GCSE, which we worked through in our West Midlands GCSE tuition price guide.
What do you pay at Rightchoice?
A Level group tuition is £200 a month for three hours a week at weekends, which is about £15.40 an hour. That is roughly 63% below the national one-to-one average of £41.88. Adult A Level resits are £250 a month, and one-to-one is available on request.
There are no contracts and no registration fee. Siblings enrolled together get 30% off. We teach at Lodge Road in West Bromwich, a short drive from Smethwick, Oldbury, Handsworth, Great Barr, Wednesbury and Walsall.
We are also a registered exam centre, so students taught here can sit their exams in the same building. A Level entry is £350 per subject. The full list is on our fees page.
Whether £15.40 an hour in a small group beats £42 an hour one-to-one depends entirely on the student. A student who needs someone sitting next to them for every question needs one-to-one. A student who needs structure, pace and someone marking their written work does better in a group, and has the budget left for a second subject.
What else should you check before you pay?
The hourly rate is rarely what decides the real cost. Ask about the things that sit underneath it, because these are where the money quietly goes:
Registration fees — a one-off charge before any teaching happens
Minimum terms — whether you are committed for a term or can stop
Hours per week — the single biggest variable, and the one least often stated
Group size — four and eight are different products at the same price
Who teaches — a subject specialist, or whoever is available
Exam entry — whether you will need a separate centre, and what that costs
If a centre will not give you a price without a meeting first, that is worth noticing. It is not necessarily a bad sign. It is a choice about who the process is designed to suit.
Frequently asked questions
How much does A Level tuition cost in Birmingham?
One-to-one in and around Birmingham generally falls between £35 and £50 an hour, below London rates of around £47 (Tutorful, June 2024). Group tuition is cheaper, commonly £25 to £35 per student per hour. Ours is £200 a month for three hours a week, about £15.40 an hour.
Is A Level tuition worth it?
It depends on the gap and the deadline. A Level grades decide university offers, and there is no resit year built into the system the way there is after GCSE. If a student is a grade off their offer with two terms to go, structured weekly teaching is usually the cheapest way to close it.
How many hours of A Level tuition does a student need?
More than one hour a week per subject, in most cases. An A Level specification is large, and an hour is barely enough to review a topic, let alone teach it and mark written work. We teach three hours a week, which gives room to cover content and practise exam technique properly.
Can adults do A Levels or resit them?
Yes. Adult A Level resit tuition is £250 a month, and we can arrange the exam entry alongside the teaching at £350 per subject. There is no upper age limit. We have written about the dates and deadlines in our guide to resitting A Levels in 2027.
Do you teach private candidates?
Yes, and we enter them for exams at our own centre. Which subjects are realistic as a private candidate depends on practical requirements, which we cover in which A Levels you can actually sit privately and in our guide to the science practical endorsement. If you are applying to university without a school behind you, we also provide predicted grades and UCAS references.
The short version
A Level tuition is more expensive than GCSE tuition because fewer people can teach it. One-to-one averages £41.88 an hour nationally. Group tuition is cheaper, but check the hours before you compare the price, because one hour a week and three hours a week are not the same product.
If you want to talk it through, come and see us at Lodge Road on a Saturday or Sunday between 12:30pm and 2:00pm, or send us an enquiry and we will come back to you.
