Book an assessmentTwo qualifications, two different skills
In-person GCSE English tuition at Lodge Road, West Bromwich, B70 8NX. Weekend group sessions, three hours a week, £150 per month, covering AQA and OCR English Language and English Literature.
English Language and English Literature are separate GCSEs, sat as four papers in total, and it is entirely normal for a student to be comfortable in one and struggling in the other. Language asks for analysis of texts they have never seen and two pieces of controlled writing. Literature asks for close knowledge of set texts, quoted from memory, with the book closed.
We teach them separately because they reward different things. Most of the marks we recover come from structure and technique rather than from reading more: answering the question that was asked, using evidence deliberately, and writing to a shape that examiners can follow.

How our GCSE English tuition works
Two GCSEs, not one
English Language and English Literature are separate qualifications with separate exams, and students routinely do well in one and badly in the other. Language rewards analysis of unseen texts and controlled writing; Literature rewards knowing set texts closely enough to quote them from memory. We teach them as the different subjects they are.
Closed book means memorised
Literature is sat closed book. Quotations have to come from memory, under time pressure, and be the right quotations for the question asked. We build a small bank of flexible quotations per text rather than long lists nobody retains.
Writing marks are structural
On Language Paper 1 and 2 the writing questions carry a large share of the marks and are the most recoverable. Paragraph structure, deliberate vocabulary and punctuation range move those marks reliably, regardless of how imaginative a student feels.

GCSE English Tuition — your questions answered
Do you teach English Language, English Literature, or both?
Both, and we treat them as separate subjects because they are. Language is unseen texts and writing; Literature is set texts sat closed book. Students often need very different help in each.
How much is GCSE English tuition in West Bromwich?
£150 per month for three hours a week in weekend groups. Siblings enrolled together receive 30% off. No contracts and no registration fee.
Do you cover the set texts my child is studying?
Tell us which texts the school has chosen and the exam board when you enquire. AQA and OCR set different texts, and schools choose differently within each, so we check rather than assume.
My child reads well but does badly in English. Why?
That is common and it is usually technique, not ability. Marks go on answering the question actually asked, structuring a response, and using evidence deliberately. Strong readers often write impressionistically and lose marks they could easily hold.
Is English Literature really closed book?
Yes. Quotations must be recalled from memory. That is why we build a compact, flexible quotation bank per text instead of long lists, and practise deploying the same quotation for different questions.
Can adults resit GCSE English with you?
Yes. English Language has a November series as well as the summer one, and adults sit exactly the same papers. Many adults need the grade 4 for an access course, nursing or teaching application.
